When you encounter the scenario where you do not want your library to have the same permissions as the host site, you can break permission inheritance by following these steps:
-
Start by navigating to the target library.
-
Locate the target folder and hover over the folder name to activate the dropdown menu.
-
Click the down arrow to the right of the name to open the dropdown menu.
-
On the dropdown menu, click "Manage Permissions". (You will need to be a library owner for this menu option to be visible.)
- Note that the message states that the folder is inheriting its permissions from the parent folder or library.
-
Also note the permissions assigned at the moment defaults to the values from the parent.
-
Click the "Actions" menu.
-
On the dropdown menu, click "Edit Permissions".
-
SharePoint will prompt for a confirmation with a dialog window.
-
Click "OK" in the dialog window.
-
A new Actions and a new Settings menu option is now visible on the permissions page. At this point, SharePoint has copied the permissions from the site as the default starting point for our customized permission set. We can now change the permissions to suit our needs.
-
Select the check boxes of the users you wish to customize.
-
Click the "Actions" menu.
-
On the dropdown menu, you can remove a user's permissions by clicking the "Remove User Permissions" option.
-
To change the user's permissions, on the dropdown menu, click "Edit User Permissions".
-
Select the permissions options you need by checking their check boxes on the Edit Permissions screen.
-
Click "OK" to apply the permissions change.
-
The users now have the new security in effect. The effect is immediate.
