Cornelius J. van Dyk's SharePoint Brain Dump

:

How-do-I---Stop-the-double-logon-prompt-when-opening-a-document-in-a-SharePoint-document-library

Thoughts, musings, outbursts and revelations of Cornelius J. van Dyk - 7 x Microsoft SharePoint MVP

I get this question a LOT in the support forums.  The most common symptom is that you have a SharePoint site that you logon to.  Once logged on, you are able to browse around on the site and navigate freely, but when you attempt to open a document from a document library on the site, you are once again prompted for logon credentials before the Office app will open the document.  The reason this happens is because the site in question is not configured as either a Trusted Site or a Local Intranet Site in your Internet Explorer credentials.  The fix is quite simple:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the target site.
  3. Once on the target site, note the status bar at the bottom right of the IE window.  It should say “Internet”:

  5. Now click “Tools” in the IE menu.  (NOTE:  If the IE menu is not visible, press the “Alt” key on your keyboard to make it visible.)
  6. On the dropdown menu, click “Internet Options”.

  8. An Internet Options modal window will open.
  9. Click on the “Security” tab.
  10. By default the “Internet” icon is selected.  Click the “Trusted sites” icon.  (NOTE:  If you wish to configure the target site as “Local intranet” instead, simply click that icon now.)
  11. Now click the “Sites” button.

  13. Another modal window, either “Trusted sites” or “Local intranet sites” opens.
  14. By default, the target site base URL is pre-populated into the “Add this website to the zone:” text field.  If this field does not contain the URL, enter it now.
  15. Click the “Add” button.
  16. It is possible that the “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone” check box is checked.  If that is the case, and the target site URL is not SSL based, you will need to UNCHECK this box before the “Add” button will work as expected.

  18. IE should now have populated the target site URL into the “Websites:” list below.
  19. Click the “Close” button.
  20. Click the “OK” button.

  22. Notice the status bar should now have changed to reflect the new security zone for the site.

At this point, you should be able to open documents without being prompted for a second login.

Enjoy
